There are also methods of automatic watering based on pipes, with perforations or drip nozzles supplying individual pots and plants. The supply may be regulated by a time clock or flow uninterrupted from a small reservoir. Plants needing humid conditions are particularly responsive to such systems.
However, although all these methods can save time and effort, they in no way reduce the need to keep a close eye on individual plants and containers. They are non-selective, and the gardener must ensure that plants receive just the amount of water they need for healthv growth.
Staging and shelving
Slatted staging is supplied as an optional extra for most greenhouses. Unless solid benching is erected – usually in alpine houses or for capillary watering – it provides an excellent form of support for pots and seed trays. Slatted staging is particularly suitable in glass-to-ground greenhouses, where other carefully-chosen plants may be grown in the bed beneath. Even if the greenhouse has a wall up to staging level, the area underneath is suitable for forcing such crops as chicory, rhubarb and seakale.
Staging should be about 75 cm (2.5 ft) high, with a maximum width of about 75 cm (2.5 ft) . In a lean-to or conservatory it can be erected in tiers to show off the plants to better advantage.
Solid benches not used for capillary watering can be covered with about 2.5 cm (1 in) of 1 cm (3/s in) clean shingle or with a proprietary clay aggregate, obtainable in several sizes. If the surface is corrugated -stronger than a flat surface – ensure that the ridges are well covered, otherwise the pots will not stand level.
